Damage 101

Invisible from the ground. Obvious from the roof.

Hail 0.75 inch (penny size) combined with strong winds can cause functional damage worth filing a claim on — older roofs and softer materials are most vulnerable. At 1 inch (quarter) damage is the recognized adjuster threshold. At 1.25 inch (golf ball) damage is almost guaranteed. 1.5 inch and up damages wood shake; 2 inch and up cracks concrete tile. We check roofs free after any storm — photo-documented report within 24 hours.

Circular impact dents

Round bruises on shingles where the granule coating has been knocked loose. Fresh impacts show the black fiberglass mat underneath.

Granule loss in gutters

Pile of shingle granules at the bottom of downspouts is a tell — the roof is shedding its protective coating.

Dented metal vents

Plumbing vents, gutter tops, and aluminum trim dent before shingles do. Adjusters use these as collateral evidence.

Chipped paint on trim

Wood fascia and trim paint chips where hail struck. Often the most visible sign from the ground.

Skylight and chimney cracks

Glass cracks on skylights and chipped mortar on chimneys appear after hail events 1.5 inch and up.

Soft spots under foot

Bruised shingles feel soft and squishy when walked on. Underlying fiberglass mat has been cracked.

Homeowner FAQs

Hail damage FAQs.

The questions we get most from Northwest Indiana and Chicagoland homeowners. If you have another, call us at (219) 400-0223.

Hail 0.75 inch (penny size) combined with strong winds can damage older roofs and softer materials enough to make a claim worth pursuing. 1 inch (quarter size) is the threshold adjusters call "functional damage" on asphalt shingles. 1.25 inch (golf ball) almost always produces clear damage. 1.5 inch and up damages wood shake and fiberglass shingles. 2 inch and up cracks concrete tile. Northwest Indiana and Chicagoland regularly see hail from 0.75 to 2.5 inches during storm season.

Most hail damage is invisible from the ground. Signs include circular dents with granule loss exposing the black fiberglass mat, bruised shingle surfaces that feel soft, dents on metal vents or gutters, and chipped paint on wood trim. We inspect free and send you a photo-documented report within 24 hours.

Most insurance carriers require notice of the loss within one year of the storm — but sooner is always better. After 6 months, adjusters get harder to convince that damage is recent. Call us as soon as you think there might be damage and we will verify for free.

Hail claims are considered "act of God" claims and typically do not raise premiums directly, because they are not considered the homeowner's fault. Your carrier might reclassify your policy but rate increases from a single hail claim are uncommon. Ask your agent about your specific carrier.

Circular impact marks where the shingle surface is bruised and granules have been knocked loose. Fresh damage shows the black fiberglass mat underneath. Older damage (from a storm you missed) may look like smooth spots where granules have worn away.
